Why this skill is so important
You agree on a goal when the coaching journey begins. Then, as the sessions unfold, other concerns appear: a business partner, something from childhood, several urgent problems or simply “I just want to talk.” Before long, the original agreement can become muddled.
Some detours are exactly where the coaching needs to go. Others scatter the client’s attention. If you pull the client back too hard, they feel controlled. If you follow every thread, they may leave without seeing progress on the reason they came to you. That is when confidence in the coaching can fade and clients may stop booking.
The solution
Learn how to help clients get what they came for while staying responsive to what matters now. You will practice how to notice a shift, name it naturally and let the client consciously choose whether to continue, return or make a new agreement.
ICF considers this skill core to professional coaching: Core Competency 3, Establishes and Maintains Agreements. This training covers both halves of the competency: establishing agreements before coaching begins, including fees, intake, confidentiality, sponsors and the overall plan; and maintaining the agreement live in each session.
Professional recognition
Attend the full live training and meet the knowledge-check standard to receive your personalized certificate of completion. Your hours are earned in ICF Core Competency 3: Establishes and Maintains Agreements.
Students who enrolled on or after November 2, 2025: your certificate is included when you qualify.
Earlier students: if you want a certificate, pay a $25 verification and administration fee afterward. This covers checking your attendance and results, preparing your certificate, and sending it to you.
If you don’t need a certificate, there is nothing to pay. Watching the replay alone does not qualify for a certificate.
Attend all 180 live instructional minutes and score at least 4 out of 6. Approval period: August 1, 2026 through August 31, 2027. Completion does not confer an ACC, PCC, MCC or other ICF credential.

Why this skill matters
When clients can see progress and feel well held, they have a clearer reason to continue the work and to recommend you. Sessions that drift do the opposite: the client leaves warm but empty-handed, and quietly stops booking. This one skill protects the value of every session you run.
Notice when the focus changes and restore direction without forcing a rigid agenda.
Help clients connect each conversation to the goals, insights and actions that matter to them.
Use calm, professional language when the conversation changes direction or time is running out.
Resources for your coaching practice
Receive the workshop recording and an Inquiry & Prompt Guide: adaptable examples to use as reference material and make your own when focusing on this competency.

Included 1
Keep for your practice: Revisit the teaching and see how agreements can drift and be reset during a session.

Included 2
Use as a reference: A framework of examples you can adapt into your own language when focusing on ICF Core Competency 3.
